This time gap was explained at the end of the book in the authors notes. The baddies are a group of brutalised survivors from one of the government Safe Scaerow in London, led by a former history teacher who’s raised an army of child soldiers to rule his ‘serf’ class. But then we all just muddle along through life, don’t we? However, in the context of “Afterlight”, it doesn’t bother me as much as it might due to the simple fact that the disaster was engineered as an exercise in population control that went too far and could not be re-started.

This is the second book out of a two-parter series, due to a googling error I read this book first, and I think Scarrow would have been much better off making this a stand alone book because it references to the first one quite heavily anyway, so you don’t miss anything, and the first book has a silly ending that annoyed me!!!!! Whats worse was the method she died – the author bangs on and on about how everyone thinks there should be a lock on the door.
